Deschamps demands more clinical performances

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps urged his team to start turning dominance into goals after seeing them stumble over the finishing line in their 1-0 win against 10-man Lille.

Brandao's 11th-minute header earned OM their second consecutive three-point haul of the fledgling Ligue 1 season but they failed to kill off Les Dogues, who were a man light for the final half hour last night after Mathieu Debuchy's red card for two bookings.

Lille could even have nicked a point at the death, with substitute Eden Hazard forcing a great save out of OM goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, leaving Deschamps a relieved man.

"The end of the match was stressful,'' said the former France captain. "We must make progress in this command of the game even if it was hot and our opponents were quality. We must be capable of controlling games better when we have a numerical superiority.

"Through tiredness and some weaknesses, we forgot to continue playing and going forward, and we conceded some chances.''

Marseille, who defeated Grenoble 2-0 on the opening weekend, are one of three teams in the league to have maximum points after two rounds of fixtures, the others being Nancy and reigning champions Bordeaux.

OM are however the only side yet to have conceded a goal.

Last night's match took place at Montpellier's Stade de la Mosson because an inquiry into a fatal accident at Marseille's Stade Velodrome during the summer is still ongoing.

Deschamps was thrilled with the contribution of his team's travelling band of fans.

"We won an away match which is down as counting as a home match,'' he is quoted on Marseille's official club website, www.om.net, as telling a press conference.

"It was a strange context but the supporters were there in force.

"There was a superb atmosphere. We must thank them for making so much noise even though there were less of them here than there would have been at the Velodrome.''
