Romario announces comeback

Brazil legend Romario has revealed he is to come out of retirement over a year after halting his playing career.

The 43-year-old, who scored 71 goals in 85 international appearances, is set to feature for Brazilian second division outfit America, where he is currently employed as the team's manager.

Romario, who retired following a glittering 23-year career that took in spells at Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven, is earmarked to contest a handful of games for the team supported by his late father, Edevair.

"I'm getting fit and the federation's authorisation should arrive next week," said Romario. "I will play to make my father's dream come true."

America confirmed the return of Romario in a statement.

"After taking a key role in the re-engineering of the club's football, Romario will make his contribution on the field," it read.

"We wish our beloved Romario all possible success. We expect that his huge goals collection - currently 1,003 - will increase soon."
