Former Liverpool defender Gregory Vignal has signed for Birmingham City from Ligue 1 side Lens on a one-year contract, subject to a medical.
The 28-year-old played on trial for Blues in the friendly draw against Sporting Gijon on Saturday and did enough to impress manager Alex McLeish.
"Gregory didn't do himself any harm at all against Gijon - it was a really positive performance and he showed all his experience," McLeish said.
"He's a good athlete, he's mobile and he's strong and aggressive. I think he stirred the fans up and British fans appreciate that kind of thing."
The French left-back played for McLeish at Glasgow Rangers in the Scotland and is eager to prove himself in the Premier League, where he made 11 appearences for Liverpool between 2000 and 2005 and played 14 games for Portsmouth in the 2005/06 season.
