MEXICO CITY -- D.C. United, Los Islanders of Puerto Rico and Mexican club Pachuca advanced Tuesday to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
D.C. United claimed its place by winning 5-4 on penalties at El Salvador's Firpo after the match was tied at 1-1 through regulation and extra time. Christian Gomez scored the equalizer for the MLS team in the 42nd minute.
The match last week was a 1-1 draw in Washington.
Los Islanders played to a scoreless draw in Puerto Rico against MLS club Toronto FC. The Puerto Rican side won the first leg 1-0 last week to advance on aggregate goals over two matches.
Los Islanders finished the match with 10 men after Kendall Jagdeosiingh was sent off in the 88th minute.
Pachuca beat Jalapa of Guatemala 7-1 to advance 10-1 on aggregate after Ulises Mendivil scored three goals in the match at Guatemala. Mario Pineyro converted a penalty for Jalapa's only goal.
