Mainz appoint Tuchel as replacement for Anderson

Mainz today appointed the untested Thomas Tuchel as their new coach after parting company with Jorn Andersen just a week before the start of the Bundesliga season.

The 35-year-old, previously coach of the Mainz under-19 team, has signed a two-year contract.

Andersen took over from current Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp last summer and led them to promotion to the top flight.

But, with six days to go until their season opener against Bayer Leverkusen, he has paid the price for failing to see eye to eye with the club hierarchy.

"We have at Mainz a job profile to define how a coach should work with the team and the club," general manager Christian Heidel said on www.bundesliga.de.

"Our strengths are teamwork, the togetherness of the team and the internal communication.

"Our approach and that of Jorn Andersen no longer matched, because the coach has gone in a different direction."

Andersen added: "We sat down together for a long time. But we have found that we are no longer in agreement on our views about the working partnership.

"That is a real pity, I regret the decision of the club very much, but our ideas were simply too different. We don't part on angry terms."

Assistant coach Jurgen Kramny has also left the club.

Mainz have now put their faith in Tuchel, who led the under-19s to their championship in June.

Heidel claimed the club had known for sometime they had, in Tuchel, a future coach of the first team.

Heidel said: "We watched Thomas Tuchel and his development as coach of our A-Juniors intensively and have discussed in the past about his perspectives with us.

"It was always clear to us that he would graduate up to the professionals. Now that moment has arrived a little early than we all thought."

Tuchel added: "The club showed me in talks a general perspective and announced very early the high esteem they hold me in.

"The timing of this decision naturally came as a surprise. Now I am living my dream here.

"I have respect for the Bundesliga but no fear."
