Sixteen-city national tournament to be held in Washington

Street Soccer USA (www.streetsoccerusa.org) and its umbrella organization HELP USA (www.helpusa.org) announced the 2009 Street Soccer USA Cup (SSUSA Cup) to be held in Washington, D.C., from July 31 through Aug. 2nd at the Washington Kastles Stadium. On July 31, 160 homeless men and women from 16 cities across the U.S. will gather in the nation's capital to compete in the three-day SSUSA Cup.

The SSUSA Cup brings together the 16-team league for three days of competition and camaraderie in which one team will capture the National SSUSA Cup title and corresponding Leonsis Trophy. The top 8 players at the SSUSA Cup, will represent the U.S. in the 48-nation Homeless World Cup which will be held in Milan, Italy in September, 2009.

Lawrence Cann, Founder and CEO of Street Soccer USA, said, "Street Soccer USA allows players to strive as part of a team towards a larger goal of improving their lives and playing for the Street Soccer USA Cup sustains them in that effort. Likewise, the Cup provides volunteers the chance to engage in a movement that shifts how we address homelessness in our society."

The Street Soccer USA Cup weekend begins with opening ceremonies at the Washington Kastles Stadium at noon on Friday, July 31 with D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, HELP USA Chair Maria Cuomo Cole, former AOL executive and Street Soccer USA supporter Ted Leonsis all in attendance.

The games begin at 1 p.m. ET with the host city Street Soccer D.C. taking on Street Soccer Minneapolis on July 31 and will be played all weekend with the finals scheduled for Aug. 2 at 3 p.m.
