BOYDS, Md. -- Thabiso Khumalo scored in the 82nd minute -- before breaking his wrist -- and put defending champion D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup final with a 2-1 win over the second-tier Rochester Rhinos on Tuesday night.
In the final, United will meet another Major League Soccer team, the Seattle Sounders.
Jaime Moreno put United ahead 1-0 in the 41st minute on a penalty. Rochester, which plays a level below MLS in the USL First Division, tied it on Tai Atieno's goal in the 62nd minute.
Khumalo then followed up a shot by teammate Chris Pontius to put United ahead. In injury time, though, Khumalo broke his right wrist.
"The 'keeper was clearing the ball, and my wrist was out of position, I guess," he said. "The ball kind of hit my wrist."
