Lahm: Bayern must reclaim Bundesliga title

Philipp Lahm says Bayern Munich must reclaim the Bundesliga title in Louis van Gaal's first season at the club.

But though the defender says domestic silverware is a must, he maintains reaching the Champions League quarter finals would still be regarded as a success.

Former coach Jurgen Klinsmann's fate was practically sealed by Bayern's elimination to eventual winners Barcelona in the last eight of the competition last season, but Lahm insists his successor van Gaal is not under any pressure to take Bayern further, at least not immediately.

He told the Welt newspaper: "We cannot miss out on the Bundesliga title again, nor can we [fail to win] the DFB-Pokal. [Reaching] the quarter-finals [in the Champions League] would certainly be a success. After that, anything is possible and it all comes down to various factors, obviously including the luck of the draw.

"Our aim has got to be to arrive at a point where we no longer have to force our luck and that we have the chance to say we can beat anybody with our own strength.

"Barcelona won the Champions League and they did not do it by chance - every expert had them down [to win it] even before. That has got to be our aim sooner or later. To have this chance, we have to play at the really highest level for a few years.''
