Universidad de Chile send Markarian off in style
Uruguayan coach Sergio Markarian ended his tenure at Universidad de Chile with a title after victory in the Chile championship final courtesy of his compatriot Juan Manuel Oliveira.
Oliveira scored in the 63rd minute to give "the U" a 1-0 away win over Union Espanola in the second leg of the Apertura final on Tuesday night, for a 2-1 aggregate victory.
The visitors dominated the match at the Santa Laura ground for long spells but were denied time and again by Espanola's Paraguayan goalkeeper Cristian Limenza until Oliveira beat him with a diving header from a left cross by Jose Contreras.
"The U" had defender Osvaldo Gonzalez sent off 11 minutes from time for a foul on Espanola's Argentine striker Raul Estevez.
"It was a very hard six months, with a huge effort to overcome a pile of difficulties, but step by step we have achieved what we set out to do," said Markarian, who is quitting over differences with the club's management.
He will be succeeded by Argentine former World Cup midfielder Jose Basualdo.
