USL Wrap: Islanders move into first

The 2008 regular season champion Puerto Rico Islanders used a pair of 1-0 victories on the week against the league-leading Charleston Battery to propel them back to the top of the USL First Division table for the first time this season. The first came Thursday evening when they snapped the Battery's 12-game unbeaten streak with a stoppage time winner by defender John Krause that handed Charleston its first loss of the year.

With second-place Carolina only earning a 1-1 draw in Austin Friday evening, the Islanders were able to make the jump from fourth to first with Saturday's victory on a 54th minute strike from Nicholas Addlery. Bill Gaudette posted both shutouts in goal.

Portland extended its unbeaten streak to 11 Friday with a 5-1 drubbing of Minnesota, who saw three players sent off as the Timbers pulled away in the victory and became the fourth member of the lead pack in the league that is separated by only two points.

Miami pulled themselves out of the cellar with two roads wins in Cleveland, rallying for a 2-1 victory Thursday and posting a 1-0 result Saturday. Also on Saturday, Montreal won the showdown of Canadian rivals against Vancouver 2-1 just two days after their stunning 6-1 loss to Toronto in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship finale cost the Whitecaps the title and Champions League berth. In the lone game Sunday, John Ball set up both Rochester goals in a 2-0 victory in Austin.

USL Second Divison

The leaders all posted wins on the week as Harrisburg rolled 4-0 against visiting Real Maryland Saturday, Crystal Palace won 2-1 at Bermuda Friday and Wilmington cruised 3-0 at Real Maryland Sunday. Richmond gave up a second half own goal to finish in a 2-2 draw at Charlotte Saturday while Pittsburgh and Western Mass played to a scoreless stalemate.

Premier Development League

The Reading Rage suffered their first loss of the year Friday, falling 1-0 on the road to Hampton Roads, but rebounded two days later to drub Virginia 5-1 on four goals from Aaron Wheeler. Reading's departure left five clubs in the ranks of the unbeaten. Forest City London stunned division leading Kalamazoo 5-0 Thursday only to squeak by last-place Indiana 1-0 Sunday. The Des Moines Menace blanked Kansas City 4-0 and the New Orleans Jesters tied Mississippi 1-1. The Otttawa Fury played three on the week, winning 2-0 over New Hampshire Tuesday before hitting the road for a 2-2 draw at Long Island Saturday and a 3-1 win at Westchester Sunday. The Kitsap Pumas downed two Canadian sides, dropping Victoria 2-1 Friday and Vancouver 4-0 Sunday.

W-League

The biggest drama was in the Great Lakes division where the unbeaten Ottawa Fury won the showdown for first against Quebec City 2-0 Thursday only to see the Amiral post a 2-1 win at London Saturday and a 2-0 victory at Hamilton Sunday to reclaim first over the Fury, who have games in hand. In the battle for third, Toronto and Buffalo played to a 1-1 stalemate Sunday. Hudson Valley kept its unbeaten status in tact, narrowly. The Lady Blues posted a 1-1 draw in Boston Wednesday and slipped by last-place Western Mass 1-0 Saturday at home.
