Nowak resigns as U.S. assistant coach

CHICAGO -- Peter Nowak has resigned as an assistant coach of the U.S. soccer team.

He was head coach Bob Bradley's top assistant on the men's team for more than two years, and led the United States' under-23 team at the Beijing Olympics.

U.S. Soccer said there were no plans to immediately replace Nowak ahead of World Cup qualifiers, the Confederations Cup in South Africa and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Mike Sorber, John Hackworth, Zak Abdel and Pierre Barrieu will remain to help Bradley.

Nowak, a former coach of D.C. United in MLS, joined the United States in December 2006.
