Olympiakos appoint Ketsbaia as head coach

Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus have appointed Temuri Ketsbaia as their new coach in place of Ernesto Valverde, the club announced on Monday.

The 41-year-old Cypriot-Georgian became the first coach to lead a Cypriot club into the Champions League group stages at Anorthosis Famagusta this season after they eliminated Olympiakos in the qualifying rounds. He quit his post at Anorthosis in April.

Valverde failed to agree terms on a contract extension with Olympiakos despite guiding them to their 12th title in 13 seasons and their 14th league and Cup double.

Club president Sokratis Kokkalis told a news conference at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium that Ketsbaia had signed a three-year contract.

"He is a young and ambitious person who will achieve the club's objectives," Kokkalis said.

"He is someone that knows Greek football very well and in our view we should all give him the support he needs in order for him to achieve success."
