Hoeness: Bayern will spend big this summer

Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness has revealed the club will invest heavily in new players this summer provided they qualify for the Champions League.

Hoeness told Bavarian television (BR) after a board meeting yesterday that his side "will get active" in the transfer market to strengthen the squad for new coach Louis van Gaal.

"We have, as has almost always been the case, received a relatively generous budget," he said. "But if we do not qualify for the Champions League, then our plans for investment will change."

Bayern have already secured the services of Ivica Olic, Anatoli Tymoschuk and Alexander Baumjohann for the coming season, but have not broken the bank since both Olic and Baumjohann will arrive on free transfers.

Another striker appears the priority since Lukas Podolski is heading back to Cologne, but Stuttgart's Mario Gomez is not a target.

"The name Gomez does not come into our plans at this moment in time," added Hoeness.

Bayern face Gomez and Stuttgart on the final day of the season on Saturday when even a win might not be enough to guarantee them the title.

Instead, they need Werder Bremen to become the first team this season to win away to Wolfsburg to stand any chance of successfully defending their title.

First up for Bremen is the UEFA Cup final, while they also have the DFB-Pokal final to look forward to, but Hoeness believes they will still give their all against the Wolves.

"We have all the faith in the management of Bremen and their coach Thomas Schaaf," said Hoeness.

"We know for certain that he will try to end the season fairly and we are not worried about there being another disaster like in Hannover."

Wolfsburg's 5-0 win at Hannover last Saturday took them to within touching distance of their first ever Bundesliga crown, meaning Bayern's clash upcoming with Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena is likely to be a battle for second place.
