Pressure "unbearable" as Marseille near title

Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo admits the pressure is ''unbearable'' as the club look to clinch their first Ligue 1 title since 1992.

OM are France's biggest underachievers in recent years, their last trophy coming in 1993 when they won the Champions League.

But they could end that record this season - with three matches left in their league campaign, they are top of the table on goal difference from Bordeaux.

It promises to be a tense end to the season and Anigo admits it is getting to him and the rest of the club.

''The stress is unbearable,'' he said.

''On the coach back from Nice (where OM won 2-0 on Wednesday), we were shattered. We are playing the matches over in our head two or three times. We are waiting for this season to come to an end because this final sprint started in February.''

Anigo acknowledges OM's suffering fans have been waiting too long for some silverware.

''For this team, it is four-and-a-half years (without a trophy). But for the club, it has been a long time,'' the 48-year-old added.

''To get results, you need stability. The first step was qualifying regularly for the Champions League. We've done that. The second objective was to break the dominance of Lyon. We are going towards that.''

On paper, Marseille have a harder run-in, with Lyon, Nancy and Rennes their next three opponents. Bordeaux must play Monaco, Caen and Le Mans, three teams in the bottom half of the table.

But Anigo told L'Equipe: ''It is going to be hard for both of us.Thinking like this shows a lack of respect for the players at Monaco, Caen and Le Mans.

If I was in their place and I read Bordeaux have easy matches coming up, I'd want to show that I'm willing to fight, that I'm not a clown.

''We are used to these situations. It's everyone's match of the season when they play OM.''

Meanwhile, the French league have confirmed Marseille will be without captain Lorik Cana and winger Mathieu Valbuena for their final match of the season, against Rennes at the Stade Velodrome, after they both picked up yellow cards in the win at Nice.
