Atlante claim CONCACAF title

Mexican side Atlante secured their second CONCACAF Champions League title with a 2-0 aggregate win over Cruz Azul.

Atlante won the first leg 2-0 before playing out a goalless draw on Tuesday to ensure the victory that means they will participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi next December.

The visitors only had one clear chance in the entire second leg encounter but Argentinian goalkeeper Federico Vilar saved well in a one-on-one situation with Cesar Villaluz in the 34th minute.

The hosts dominated from then on, passing well and choosing to preserve the 0-0 draw and ensure their victory.

"This is a very important achievement for the squad. It is something unforgettable," said Federico Vilar.

Coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz added: "This team needed an international title to show our class.

"Now we have the responsability of representing the region in the FIFA Club World Cup. From tomorrow we will work hard to make sure we are in good shape for that tournament."

Atlante also won the title in 1983 after beating Suriname's Robinhood in the finals.
