Wenger rules out transfers splurge

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted his side does not need major surgery in the close season and he will not be breaking the bank for wholesale new faces.

Though the manager admitted he needed to strengthen in certain areas following Sunday's 4-1 home humbling at the hands of Chelsea, he still believes there is the nucleus of a successful side.

"We have a team which is 22 years old (on average), why should we look for revolution?" Wenger told L'Equipe. "That would be stupid and not responsible.

"I still believe that when you have responsibilities, you have to make decisions and stand up for that. Until now we have not done too badly

"I do not think that the team needs major investments."

Former Arsenal midfielder Petit believes Wenger should break with tradition and spend what he can.

"Arsenal have not won anything in four years," Petit said.

"Everything was done to bring together a young team and make it progress step by step, after [Thierry] Henry's departure.

"But, at the end of the day, the transition did not work out.

"Arsene Wenger was always protected by David Dein, but today the shareholders, the fans and the press are doing soul-searching.

"Arsene is extremely intelligent, he is a visionary. I am not saying that he should change his ways, but if he made slight changes and managed to find a compromise between youth and experience, like Manchester (United) and every dominant team in Europe do, he would find the right mix.

"But it means spending more money."

• Sparta Rotterdam are looking at signing Arsenal youngster Vincent van den Berg.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who has spent the season on loan at FC Zwolle and is out of contract in the summer, will play for Jong Sparta against Jong NEC Nijmegen on Tuesday.

"He has already trained with us a couple of times," Sparta technical director Richard Grootscholten told ELF Voetbal.

"Tonight he can play in a match so we can see what he can offer us. That's what trial matches are for, isn't it?

"He may be a reinforcement for Sparta. We of course know that Vincent is a good player but he was out for a while.

"We will decide later on if we are going to offer him a permanent contract. I don't know when that will happen, we don't want to put a timeframe on it. Let's wait and see what happens tonight."
