Rummenigge optimistic over deal for Van Gaal

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge remains confident Louis van Gaal will be their new boss.

The Bundesliga giants have targeted the AZ Alkmaar coach as the man they want to be Jurgen Klinsmann's permanent replacement.

General manager Uli Hoeness had admitted the deal was in danger of falling through over AZ's reluctance to let go of the man who had led them to their first Dutch title since 1981.

Van Gaal is under contract with AZ until 2010 and club president Dirk Scheringa has made it clear in no uncertain terms he has no intention of letting him go.

Rummenigge, though, told Munich's TZ newspaper: "I have no reason to be pessimistic."

Indeed, so optimistic is Rummenigge of bringing Van Gaal to the Allianz Arena that he has not even considered another option.

He said: "We won't let some newspaper articles in Holland disturb us. We won't occupy ourselves with a Plan B at the moment."

He added: "The situation is the same as before, that there is a contractual relationship between Van Gaal and AZ which is in force until June 30, 2010. Therefore Louis van Gaal has to now try to get out of this contractual relationship.

"We know of an agreement between him and president Scheringa that allows him to get out of his contract when he wins an important title. Now we will simply wait."

AZ yesterday disputed this fact, Scheringa's spokesman Klaas Wilting telling www.bild.de: "Louis van Gaal has a contract with AZ Alkmaar until 2010 and we hope that he fulfils it. There is no get-out clause in his contract."

Bayern sacked Klinsmann last month and placed Jupp Heynckes in charge on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.

Van Gaal quickly emerged as their preferred candidate, although the club themselves have had no contact with AZ.

"The contractual relationship concerns Louis van Gaal and Alkmaar. The coach has to sort things out with the club," Rummenigge added.

The Bavarians appear to have ruled out a compensation payment as a way of securing Van Gaal's services.

"In our talk Louis van Gaal put extra worth on the fact that he would sort out the problem, not Bayern," said the chairman.

Van Gaal himself, though, has doubts whether the move will go through.

"Bayern Munich is a dream club for me," he was quoted as saying by Kicker. "But I don't know whether I can really go to Germany."
