Twente boss McClaren being lined up for Ajax job?

Former England manager Steve McClaren is being lined up to take over at Ajax from the departing Marco van Basten according to a report in the Times.

•  McClaren set for Ajax hotseat?

McClaren has enjoyed great success in his first season in Holland after guiding FC Twente to second place in the Dutch Eredivisie and a Dutch Cup final; while he has gone some way to rebuilding his reputation after his failure to qualify England for Euro 2008.

Van Basten, the 44-year-old former Holland manager, resigned after Ajax failed to qualify for the Champions League - dropping to third spot and a place in the Europa League next season - and claimed he was not up to the job.

John van't Schip, Van Basten's assistant, will take charge for Ajax's final game of the season - at home to Twente on Sunday - but it is the Englishman who heads the list of possible candidates.

McClaren is halfway through a two-year contract with Twente, but has recently been linked with a return to England with Sunderland or Middlesbrough and could be tempted by the prestige of managing one of Europe's giants.

The other names on the shortlist are apparently Frank Rijkaard and Co Adriaanse, with Ajax keen to recapture some of the glory of their previous years. They have not won the Eredivisie title since 2003-04 and have struggled for regular silverware since the late 90s.

Rijkaard is eager to get back into management but will not jump at the first offer which comes along, according to his agent.

"Rijkaard will think about all serious offers," Overeem told Sportweek. "But it must be the right club, under the right circumstances. He would like to start again but it is not that he needs to get a new job.

"It must be a sporting challenge in a competition that appeals to the imagination."

Overeem also suggested his client - a former coach of Holland - would not be interested in a return to the international game.

He said: "All big European countries are interesting. Rijkaard is open minded in this. The only thing he doesn't want is to be a national team boss again."
