Iran coach Mayelikohan quits after two weeks - Report

Iran head coach Mohammad Mayelikohan has resigned after just two weeks in charge of the team, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website reported on Tuesday.

The Iranian Football Federation President Ali Kaffashian was quoted as saying that Mayelikohan's resignation had been accepted and that a new coach would be selected by Sunday. Mayelikohan, who did not oversee a match, replaced former Iran striker Ali Daei this month as coach of the three-times Asian champions.

It was his second spell as national team manager following an 18-month reign which ended in November 2007.

Daei was sacked after regional rivals Saudi Arabia launched a late fightback to beat Iran 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match on March 28 in Tehran.

The defeat pushed Iran down to fourth place in Group Two ahead of a trip to North Korea on June 6 before hosting United Arab Emirates four days later.

The top two teams in the group qualify automatically for the tournament in South Africa with the third-placed side going into a playoff.
