Relegation would have finished me, says Harry

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp admits he may have been forced into early retirement if he had failed to keep the club in the Premier League this season.

Redknapp was appointed six months ago to get the club out of trouble and they have only secured safety in the last few weeks, with hopes now of pushing for a place in Europe.

While there were genuine concerns about staying in the top flight, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told Redknapp he wanted him at White Hart Lane next season even if they were in the League Championship.

Redknapp, however, said: "I would have been finished here, I wouldn't have stayed. I told Daniel when I signed a contract that I'd leave if we got relegated. I probably would have called it a day, in all honesty."

Redknapp's men face Newcastle United this weekend, with Alan Shearer's men now in the thick of the relegation battle.

Shearer has been appointed until the end of the season and Redknapp feels it will be make-or-break time for the former England striker if he wants to remain in management.

"If he doesn't go with it now, I don't know if there will be tomorrows for him," Redknapp said. "This was always his job, everyone who went there said Alan will eventually take over. Where does he go from Newcastle?"
