Real Betis sack coach Chaparro after poor run

Real Betis have sacked coach Paco Chaparro with the club just one point above the relegation zone.

Betis have won only one of their last 10 league matches, albeit drawing seven of them, to slip down to 16th place in the Primera Division standings.

Jose Maria Nogues, who had been in charge of Betis` B team, has taken control for the final nine games of the campaign with the possibility of continuing in the post next season if he manages to keep the Seville-based club in the top flight.

Chaparro, having already coached the senior side for the final game of the 2006/07 season, was also promoted from Betis` reserve ranks when he took over the hotseat for the second time in December 2007 following the sacking of Hector Cuper.

The 66-year-old Chaparro`s final game in charge was Saturday`s 3-3 home tie with fellow strugglers Numancia - Betis` fifth successive draw.

"Real Betis want to express their gratitude to Paco Chaparro for his dedication to the club and wish him luck for the future," a Betis statement read.

Betis travel to Racing Santander this weekend.
