Timmer heading for Feyenoord exit

Feyenoord's Henk Timmer is free to look for another club after being told he will not be the first-choice goalkeeper next season.

The 37-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mario Been, who will move to Rotterdam from NEC Nijmegen to take over as coach on July 1.

Interim coach Leon Vlemmings will retain Timmer as first choice until the end of the current campaign, when the Holland international will depart despite being eligible for a contract extension if he plays 30 games for Feyenoord this term.

"Henk can of course end the season at Feyenoord, our current coach Leon Vlemmings is satisfied with him," director Eric Gudde told the club's official website.

"But, it would be best for Feyenoord and Henk to go into the new season with the knowledge that he isn't the first choice of the new coach."

Gudde believes the move is in the best interest of both parties.

"We know that Henk would love to go with Oranje (the national team) to the World Cup in South Africa next year," he added.

"The chance that he will be selected will be much bigger if he is under contract at another club next season than if he stays at Feyenoord as second or maybe even third keeper.

"Feyenoord have no interest in keeping such an experienced and expensive keeper under contract, when the new coach has already stated Timmer will hardly get any playing time under him.

"This is the best solution."
