Five trends of the 2014-15 Premier League

Tactics & Analysis
By ESPN Staff

Ajax drop more points in title race

Ajax dropped yet more points in the race for the Eredivisie title as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Heracles Almelo.

Miralem Sulejmani and Luis Suarez, with a penalty, scored in the space of three second-half minutes to cancel out goals from Ricky van den Bergh and Vojtech Schulmeister.

The point saw the Amsterdammers close the gap on leaders AZ Alkmaar to nine points, but AZ can move 12 clear if they win their game in hand against Roda JC tomorrow.

Marco van Basten's Ajax side have now picked up just one point from their last three games.

At the other end of the table, Volendam clinched their first away win of the season at the 11th time of asking as the basement boys came from behind to beat Willem II 2-1.

Henny Schilder struck the winner five minutes from the end - only Volendam's fifth goal on their travels this season - to lift his side to within a point of second-bottom De Graafschap.

The game had started in familiarly ominous fashion for the visitors, with Arjan Swinkels giving Willem an early lead from the penalty spot.

Rowin van Zaanen levelled in the second half to pave the way for a long-awaited away triumph.

In the night's other game, Nicky Hofs struck six minutes from time to earn Vitesse Arnhem a 1-0 win at home to in-form Heerenveen.

Tomorrow, FC Twente host NAC Breda, FC Utrecht welcome De Graafschap, Feyenoord take on city rivals Sparta Rotterdam and FC Groningen tackle NEC Nijmegen.

PSV Eindhoven host ADO Den Haag on Thursday.
