A Jackson Martinez hattrick helped Colombian side Independiente to a 4-0 victory over Uruguayan giants Penarol in the first stage of the Copa Libertadores.
Forward Martinez put Independiente ahead with a superb header in the 15th minute before he doubled his side's advantage four minutes later with a shot on the turn inside the box.
Ivan Corredor fired home from a free kick midway through the first half to ensure there was no way back for Penarol before Martinez completed his hattrick when he pounced on a rebound from off the bar early in the second half.
Elsewhere, Universidad de Chile saw off Mexican side Pachuca 1-0.
Sergio Markarian's side clinched the victory in the early stages when Emilio Hernandez set up Marcelo Diaz, who had the simple task of putting the ball into the net.
"I believe that the team played well during the first half, they controlled the ball and put pressure on their defence although we lacked pace," said Markarian.
Pachuca meet Universidad next Wednesday needing to win by two goals to go on into the group stage.
