Brazilian Diego signs for Phoenix

Brazilian attacking midfielder Diego has joined Wellington Phoenix for two years after being released from A-League rivals Adelaide United, the New Zealand club says.

Diego, 29, is seen as filling a crucial role in the Phoenix lineup for the next A-League season.

"He's someone (coach) Ricki Herbert and I had been looking at for a while and he's exactly the type of player we need," Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said in a statement.

"What we found this season is the need for an attacking midfield-style player. We had (Brazilian guest player) Fred for a few weeks and we really saw the difference he brought to the team.

"The agenda was to go out and get an attacking-minded midfielder and Diego really fits the bill."

Diego, who formerly played with Miami FC and Kansas City in the United States, was released this week by Adelaide United after three seasons and 28 matches.
