Babbel hoping to keep Lehmann at Stuttgart

Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel hopes goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will stay with the club beyond the end of the season.

The former Arsenal stopper joined Stuttgart on a one-year contract last summer, but has yet to decide whether he will extend his deal.

The club lie in 10th place at the halfway stage of the season and 39-year-old Lehmann is waiting to see what the club can achieve before committing.

''Jens is not happy with mediocrity,'' Babbel told the Bild newspaper. ''That is understandable. Due to his age he will not have many more chances to win titles.

''Therefore the team have a duty. They have to show Jens that we are on the up.

''I have spoken to him and told him how pleased I would be if he stays. The whole team benefits from his personality. He knows in how high esteem he is held by us.''
