Kossie's future at Sydney uncertain

Uncertainty surrounds John Kosmina's future after Sydney FC missed out on the A-League finals for the first time.

But there was no doubting what Kosmina thought of his rival coach Frank Farina after the Queensland Roar officially killed off the A-League glamour club's top four hopes with a 3-1 win at Brisbane on Saturday night.

After the pair had to be separated from an animated sideline exchange on fulltime, the besieged Sydney FC mentor took aim again in the post-match press conference by calling Farina a "liar".

Roar striker Sergio van Dijk's hat-trick may have left Sydney FC's season hopes on the canvas but Kosmina still came out swinging at fulltime.

At one stage Kosmina held Farina by the back of the head in their lively sideline conversation before Roar official Gary Wilkins stepped in.

The stage had been set for fireworks following Farina's claim in a Brisbane newspaper that a mid-week friendly phone call with Kosmina turned nasty after the Sydney FC mentor began taunting him.

"I actually had a shot at Frank afterwards. The conversation (in the newspaper) didn't happen - Frank lied, end of story," Kosmina said.

"It was a fairly immature, very unintelligent, typical Farina-esque attempt at trying to beat up the game for whatever reasons I don't know.

"He apologised so I said `well put it in the papers where you put the other crap'.

"Why Frank wants to get into that sort of crap I don't know.

"But it's finished as far as I'm concerned.

"I just don't like liars. Don't mind a beat-up, a bit of fun but not like that."

Farina's post-match press conference was held before Kosmina appeared - and the Roar coach gave a very different version.

"We just had a chat. There was nothing there. We had a difference of opinion on a couple of things," he said.

"I still like John, he is still my mate."

But Kosmina has more than a niggling Farina to worry about right now.

He is a real chance of becoming the third Sydney FC coach in four years to be shown the door after the glamour club's spectacular fall in 2008-09.

After going through the first five rounds unbeaten, Sydney FC managed just three more wins in their next 15 games.

Kosmina still has a year left on his contract - but his future will be clearer once new owners David Traktovenko and Paul Ramsey take charge in the coming weeks.

Sydney FC goalkeeper Clint Bolton was ruled out on Saturday night after suffering an allergic reaction during the warmup that caused his eyes to swell almost shut, forcing Kosmina to rush third choice stopper Ivan Necevski into the starting 11.

And Sydney FC were forced to play the final minutes with 10 men after youngster Zach Cairncross was sent off for a crude challenge on Andrew Packer.

Kosmina complained that efforts by the Roar's Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto were similar to Cairncross' 87th minute gaffe.

"I thought he was very unfortunate with the send-off," he said.

"If you look at Craig Moore studs-up, if you look at Danny Tiatto with the two-footer on the sideline against Rhyan (Grant) - I dont know what the rules are."

But Kosmina conceded that Sydney FC didn't deserve to be in the finals.

"On merit if you look at the games that we have tossed away whether it is poor form or play we don't deserve to be in the finals," he said.
