Redknapp defends Spurs' transfer tactics

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has defended his club's conduct during a January transfer window when they have been accused of unsettling players.

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia accused Spurs of turning Kenwyne Jones' head, while Gareth Southgate has spoken out over the pursuit of Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing.

The latest episode has involved Wales striker Craig Bellamy telling West Ham he wants to move to White Hart Lane.

"We haven't tapped anyone up,'' Redknapp. "Why has their head been turned? All that's happened is that (chairman) Daniel Levy spoke to Niall Quinn and asked if they'd sell Kenwyne Jones.''

Redknapp feels there are also rumours circulating about his own players, such as Jose Mourinho wanting Jermaine Jenas with him at Inter Milan.

"Am I getting upset because suddenly Mourinho says he wants Jenas?'' Redknapp said.

"I don't want to sell Jenas. End of story.

"All that's happened with Kenwyne Jones is that the chairman has rung Niall Quinn and what's wrong with that?''

Redknapp has already signed Jermain Defoe from Portsmouth this month and is close to adding Wigan's Wilson Palacios to his squad.

Jenas will miss the clash against Portsmouth tomorrow when Redknapp faces the club he left less than three months ago. Spurs will also be without Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who is suspended.

Redknapp has urged fans not to repeat their abuse of Sol Campbell - but he is expecting hostility towards himself from Pompey fans.

Spurs supporters have never forgiven Campbell for joining rivals Arsenal in 2001 and songs aimed at the 34-year-old have led to 11 people have been charged with indecent chanting.

Redknapp said: "What's it all about? It's a game of football. What happened last time with the treatment of Sol Campbell - there is no place in football for that.

"Racist chants or homophobic chants - there is no place for it in football.''

Some Pompey fans are also upset with Redknapp, despite their FA Cup triumph last season, after leaving them in October for Spurs.

Redknapp feels the majority of Pompey fans appreciate the success he brought to Fratton Park, and the quality of players he left behind.

"What kind of reception should I get and what reception will I get is two different things,'' he said. "What do I deserve? I had six fantastic years there and brought the club nothing but success.''
