Sol set to sign Brazilian star Marta

ESPN has learned that the Los Angeles Sol of the Women's Professional Soccer League has signed Brazilian star Marta. League Officials from the WPS, the new seven-team league kicking off this spring, have confirmed that Brazilian soccer star Marta will formally announce her signing Monday night in Zurich at the FIFA Year-End Awards Gala.

The league would not comment or confirm Marta's salary. However, according to the Expressen, a daily newspaper in Stockholm, Marta turned down a new contract offer from her Swedish club team Umea IK and agreed to a three-year $1.5 million deal with the Sol.

The 22-year-old Marta, who can play either as a striker or midfielder, has been capped 45 times for the Brazilian women's national team and is a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year (and could win her third award on Monday). She is widely regarded as the best female player in the world.

Marta's opening game will be on March 29, when the Los Angeles Sol face the Washington Freedom at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
