The Los Angeles Sol of the new Women's Professional Soccer League are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brazilian star Marta. According to the Expressen, a daily newspaper in Stockholm, Marta turned down a new contract offer from her Swedish club team Umea IK and is on the verge of agreeing a three-year $1.5 million deal with the Sol.
In a telephone interview with the New York Times, the Sol's general manager Charlie Naimo confirmed the club were in talks with Marta. "We're in a great place with it [Marta's contract], but I don't want to say anything without having a signed document."
The 22-year-old Marta, who can play either as a striker or midfielder, has been capped 45 times for the Brazilian women's national team and is widely regarded as the best female player in the world.
