Leroux sends U.S. U-20 women past Germany
The U.S. U-20 women's national team defeated Germany 1-0 in Coquimbo, Chile, to reach the final of the U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup.
In an intense semifinal, the U.S. relied on a strike from Sydney Leroux, her fifth goal of the event, to come out ahead.
Leroux's goal came in the 21st minute when she slid home a cross from the dangerous Nikki Washington.
The Germans pressed for an equalizer but rarely threatened until Verena Faisst forced a fine reflex save from U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 88th minute. Naeher picked up her ninth shutout of the year and her third of the tournament.
The U.S. will face Korea DPR in the final (Sunday, 4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN360) while Germany will play France in the third-place match.
