Things starting to turn for West Ham

Well, this is just getting plain silly now. Months went by with the Hammers unable to keep a clean sheet then Gianfranco says "We will have a look at it" and suddenly we look as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar. Just what the hell has the man done?

The Hammers third clean sheet in a row brings us five points from the last three games but, more importantly, a morale boosting result at Anfield where we have famously got nothing since Geoff Hurst last nodded in a winner and I wet my nappy in the excitement.

The Soccernet stats tell me that Liverpool had twenty five shots on goal - most of them off target it must be said - but it never seemed like it as the Hammers staunch rearguard action never looked likely to crack and, indeed, it was probably West Ham who came closest to scoring when Craig Bellamy unleashed a rocket that struck the post and flew across.

Once again, Robert Green was in superb form - why is this man not playing for England? - while the central defensive partnership of Upson and the Ginger Headed One continue to impress.

Liverpool had chances - of course they did! - but it always looked as if they were going to have to produce something special to breach the Hammers defence while the visitors themselves always seemed likely to produce something on the break.

It may seem silly to get excited over such a result but, really, for West Ham this is as good as a 3-0 win elsewhere.

Top of the League, what a joke
Kevin Brodie, Liverpool Correspondent

Well Liverpool are top of the league and somehow I just don't feel good. I just watched Liverpool fail to score, again, at home against a team that we should have beaten. OK we were better on Monday than the previous home game against Fulham; but overall we never really did enough to convince me that we were going to score.

Gerrard was back to his more preferred central midfield role, which was a mistake. Neither Keane nor Kuyt played well upfront, but Kuyt was better then Keane, which frankly is not hard these days. Keane has been nothing short of a £20 million disaster to this point. Surely Crouch would give us a better option up front.

The defence played well, Hyypia and Carragher excelled and even our left back was better. Riera is in a very worrying slump and minus a couple of moments had a very poor game. Yossi was okay on the right but really he is not a right midfielder.

With Gerrard so far away from the goal and Torres in the stands I'm afraid our team just isn't the same. I'm just gutted by that performance and our failure to put some distance between us and the pack.

This is a very difficult spell and the team does not seem able to grind out results against teams that sit deep. I don't have the answer and obviously neither does Rafa.
