No. 3-ranked Maryland defeated No. 9 California 2-1 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in College Park, Md.
Maryland (20-3) got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute when Omar Gonzalez headed home a corner kick. The Terrapins notched a second goal off of a deflection. Andrew Wiedeman pulled back a goal for the Golden Bears in the 68th minute, but Cal was unable to find an equalizer.
Junior keeper Stefan Frei made seven saves as Cal outshot Maryland 13-12 for the game.
