Premier League: Sunderland battered, Villa held

Sunderland slipped into the relegation zone after a 4-1 home battering by Bolton Wanderers.

The Black Cats have now lost five out of six games, including the last four at the Stadium of Light.

Things had started brightly for the hosts as Djibril Cisse fired them into the lead from Steed Malbranque's incisive pass but Matt Taylor looped a header past Craig Gordon to level on 18 minutes.

Gary Cahill then rifled in a crisp low shot to put Wanderers in front after the hosts failed to clear a free-kick.

Johan Elmander added a third from a tight angle after Danny Collins' horrific mis-control before he made it 4-1 after Kevin Nolan fed him inside the area.

Aston Villa failed to move up to third in the table after a goalless draw with Fulham at Villa Park - the second time in a week the Cottagers have held top four opposition after their draw at Anfield last weekend.

Ashley Young shot wide from close range and Stiliyan Petrov headed over but Fulham held firm for a well-earned point.

A dull north-east derby between Middlesbrough and Newcastle at the Riverside sparked into life in the second-half.

Obafemi Martins and Danny Guthrie went close for the visitors - both having shots that flashed just wide.

But Boro did most of the pressing after the break with Afonso Alves going close of a number of occasions, with Shay Given again in fine form for the Magpies.

Ishmael Miller gave West Bromwich Albion the lead against Wigan at the JJB, coolly slotting home after racing through on Chris Kirkland following a Titus Bramble gaffe.

But Henri Camara levelled things up with an overhead kick after a mistake from Paul Robinson.

And with just five minutes to go Emerson Boyce nodded the Latics in front to give them their second home win in a week.

Marlon King's fine turn and finish in injury time handed Hull a 1-0 lead over Stoke at a foggy Britannia Stadium after a poor opening half.

But a penalty from Ricardo Fuller rescued a point for the home side after he was felled by Boaz Myhill in Hull's goal.
