Champions League: Euro heavyweights progress

A clutch of Europe's top sides moved into the last sixteen of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Manchester United and opponents Villarreal booked their place in the last sixteen, as did Arsenal, Juventus, Real Madrid, Porto, Lyon and Bayern Munich.

Nicklas Bendtner ensured Gunners fans got some welcome good news after a turbulent week after he scored the winner against Dynamo Kiev. His 85th minute goal came after a superb long ball from new skipper Cesc Fabregas.

Former captain William Gallas nearly gifted Kiev the lead but striker Ismael Bangoura hit the post after the Frenchman had inadvertently put him through on goal.

In Group G's other game, Porto beat Fenerbahce 2-1 thanks to a brace from Lisandro López. Colin Kazim-Richards hit a consolation for the Turkish side.

Villarreal sat back against Manchester United and secured the 0-0 draw they were after. Ronaldo nearly broke the deadlock though, forcing goalkeeper Diego Lopez to turn his vicious shot onto the bar.

Joan Capdevila was red carded near the end for a studs up challenge on Ronaldo, who didn't make himself popular with the home crowd.

Celtic failed to break their hoodoo in the Champions League, losing 2-1 away at Aalborg.

Barry Robson gave Celtic the lead but Lucas de Deus Santos Caca equalised before a Gary Caldwell own goal ensured their miserable away run in the competition continued.

Juventus and Real Madrid ensured they will go through in Group H. Juve hit the post three times on their way to a 0-0 draw in snowy Zenit St Petersburg.

Raul kept up his incredible scoring run in the Champions League as he gave struggling Madrid a 1-0 win in Belarus against BATE Borisov.

Lyon and Bayern Munich are also through in Group F. Bayern beat Steaua Bucuresti 3-0 at home thanks to two goals from Miroslav Klose and one from Luca Toni.

Lyon won 2-1 in Florence against Fiorentina. Jean Makoun and Karim Benzema got the goals for the French champions, Alberto Gilardino scored for La Viola.
