No. 18 Indiana (12-6-3) came up just short in its quest for a 12th Big Ten title, falling 1-0 to No. 16 Michigan State (13-5-1) in the Big Ten Championship match Sunday afternoon in Madison, Wis.
The Hoosiers controlled the game, outshooting the Spartans 19-6 and taking 11 corner kicks to MSU's two, but Doug DeMartin's goal won it for Michigan State.
"Despite the outcome, I think out guys can walk away from the game feeling good about how they played," said head coach Mike Freitag. "We just need to keep our heads up, forget about this game and move on to the NCAA Tournament."
DeMartin struck in the 57th minute for his 17th goal of the season after Louis Stephens set him up. Despite dominating possession, the Hoosiers were unable to find an equalizer.
