Verloo leads U.S. U-17 women past Germany

The U.S. U-17 women's national team advanced to the championship game of the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, defeating Germany 2-1 in the semifinal. Goals from forwards Vicki DiMartino and Courtney Verloo enabled the U.S. back from a 1-0 first-half deficit.

The U.S. will face Korea DPR in the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Final on Nov. 16 at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. Kickoff for the championship game is 4 p.m. local (10 p.m. ET on Nov. 15). North Korea edged England 2-1 in the other semifinal to earn its place in the title match.

"It's awesome. I'm just so proud of the kids. Not only in terms of pulling out the result and winning a World Cup semifinal against a great team in Germany, but in the way they played," said U.S. coach Kazbek Tambi. "We played our best game against a great team and played a great brand of soccer. I think we represented America well in terms of some good soccer today, so I am really proud of them."

The winning goal for the U.S. came in the 81st minute after Verloo swept home from six yards out following a goalmouth scramble. For the game, the U.S. outshot Germany 15-9 and placed 10 shots on goal to Germany's five.
