Injured Van Nistelrooy to miss Real trip to Almeria

MADRID, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy will miss Real Madrid's Primera Liga match at Almeria on Sunday because he has failed to recover from a knee injury, the Spanish champions said on Saturday.

The Dutch international had been due to return from suspension but a knock to his right knee during Real's 2-1 Champions League defeat on Oct. 21 was still troubling him, the club said in a statement on their website.

"We thought he would have recovered ... but he still has problems and he won't be ready," said coach Bernd Schuster.

Defender Michel Salgado is also out with a knee problem but defender Fabio Cannavaro returns to the squad after he was rested for last weekend's 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao.

After eight matches, Real are in third place in the table, level with Barcelona on 19 points, one behind leaders Valencia.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red said he could not remember anything about his collapse in the 3-2 defeat at third-tier Real Union in the Copa Del Rey.

The Spanish international was running back towards the halfway line in the 13th minute of the last-32, first leg tie on Thursday when he suddenly fell face first and lay motionless.

Medical staff moved quickly and the 23-year-old showed signs of movement as he was carried off on a stretcher.

De la Red regained consciousness in the dressing room and was taken to a local hospital where he stayed overnight under observation before returning to the capital on Friday.

"I can't remember a thing, only the move beforehand, and then I woke up on the stretcher," de la Red told Saturday's edition of Marca newspaper.

The incident evoked memories of the death last season of Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta, who collapsed during a league match and died several days later due to a heart condition.

Tests on De la Red showed nothing untoward but he will rest at home this weekend as a precaution and will miss the champions' Primera Liga match at Almeria on Sunday, de la Red told the club's website.

"A lot of people have called me, I didn't understand all the commotion but now I have seen the footage I see why they were alarmed," he said.

"Fortunately I feel quite well and I want to thank all those who were worried about me and the messages of goodwill I have received.

"I am going to ... watch the match against Almeria on television. They are three important points we need and we are sure to win. The team is strong and motivated."
