Revolution midfielder Smith suspended two games

NEW YORK -- New England midfielder Khano Smith was suspended two additional games by the MLS on Wednesday for endangering the safety of a Kansas City Wizards player in a game this past weekend.

Smith was shown a red card for serious foul play after a tackle on Wizards forward Herculez Gomez in the 42nd minute of the Revolution's 3-1 loss on Saturday. The league found that Smith made an egregious challenge that endangered Gomez.

Saturday's ejection automatically comes with a one-game suspension and a $250 fine. Smith will now miss the Revolution's entire playoff series against Chicago that begins Thursday. He will also have to sit out the opening game of the next round if New England advances. The suspension will carry over to the opening game of next season if the Revolution fail to advance.

Smith was also fined an additional $1,000 by the league.

The league also fined New England coach Steve Nicol $1,000 for critical comments he made after Saturday's game.
