Terry wins appeal against Eastlands red card

Chelsea have succeeded in an appeal against the red card shown to John Terry in Saturday's victory at Manchester City.

The England captain was due to serve a three-match ban for serious foul play, starting with the crunch clash with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge this weekend. But the Football Association's independent panel has ruled in favour of the defender.

Terry was sent off by referee Mark Halsey after he hauled down Brazilian forward Jo in the centre circle. Halsey believed the Chelsea skipper had denied Jo the chance to go on and create a goal scoring opportunity by using serious foul play, which is why he was not dismissed for a professional foul.

But Chelsea was incensed by the decision as Ricardo Carvalho was clearly a covering defender and would have most likely intercepted the ball.

Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari appealed the decision claiming wrongful dismissal on Monday after holding talks with the coaching staff and other club officials.

Scolari will now have his talismanic central defender available for the showdown with Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday as well as the Carling Cup tie at Portsmouth and the league date at Stoke City.
