Red Bulls trade Freeman to Toronto FC
Red Bull New York announced Friday that it has traded defender Hunter Freeman to Toronto FC in exchange for a third and fourth round pick in the 2009 MLS Supplemental Draft.
"We want to thank Hunter for his service during his time here in New York," said sporting director Jeff Agoos. "Hunter has informed us that he wants to experience the challenge of playing overseas next season and we felt that this deal gives us roster flexibility moving forward, opening up our options as the league transaction deadline nears."
Toronto FC retains Freeman's rights until Dec. 31, 2009. If Freeman returns to the league before or on that date, Toronto FC will give New York its second-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. If Freeman returns after Dec. 31, 2009, New York retains Freeman's MLS rights and would not receive compensation by Toronto FC.
This season, Freeman played in 14 games and made 10 starts for New York, earning one assist.
