FA not investigating Downing over agent

The Football Association today insisted they are not investigating Middlesbrough and England international Stewart Downing after claims made by his former agent.

Ian Elliott was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering charges earlier this month after Downing made an official complaint.

However, Elliott released a statement yesterday in which he suggested the FA were looking into the conduct of the player and his club as a result of claims made by him.

But an FA spokesman told PA Sport: "After Middlesbrough FC and Stewart Downing had alerted us to concerns about Ian Elliott's handling of Downing's financial affairs, Ian Elliott submitted a complaint himself.

"However, this matter is on hold until the outcome of the police action, and there is no active investigation at this moment in time."

In his statement, Elliott, who had represented Downing since the start of his career until earlier this year, protested his innocence.

He said: "The allegations are categorically denied and in the event that any charges are brought against me, they will be vigorously defended.

"I do not owe Downing any money and I in fact have a substantial claim against him for breach of contract, which has been ongoing since February 2008.

"I understand that the conduct of Downing and Middlesbrough Football Club is being investigated by the FA. If necessary, I look forward to facing him in court."

Downing signed a new five-year contract at Boro earlier this year after splitting from Elliott.
