Napoli forward Marcelo Zalayeta is hoping to be fit for his side's opening game of the Serie A season against Roma.
The 29-year-old scored eight goals during the first half of his debut campaign for Napoli before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in the game against Roma back in March.
Zalayeta has not played since, but has targeted Napoli's opening game at the Stadio Olimpico as his return.
'I've tried to give everything to try and get back, with the aim being to return against Roma,' he told Corriere dello Sport.
'It would be fantastic to play at the Olimpico. There's a week to go so we'll see. It'll be up to the coach to decide.'
Despite being ready to return, the Uruguayan is not assured of a place in the starting XI due to the presence of new signing German Denis.
But Zalayeta is adamant he is not worried by the competition from the Argentinian forward.
'We have the same characteristics, but I'm sure there won't be any problems because the season is long,' he continued.
'It's important to have a big squad with lots of quality when you want to go far on a number of fronts and lead the way.'
