Cole: England are spoilt for choice

England midfielder Joe Cole has backed his team-mates to get behind their captain for the friendly with the Czech Republic on Wednesday - whoever it is.

Cole's Chelsea team-mate John Terry and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand are vying to lead Fabio Capello's side at Wembley.

'I think whoever gets the nod the boys will get right behind him,' said Cole.

England's experienced players would all pull together and several natural leaders would come to the fore, according to Cole.

'Whether they are leading us from the front, there are five or six leaders in the team, there are captains all over the pitch,' added Cole.

'There's not much to choose between those two (Terry and Ferdinand), Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Ashley Cole - there are players there who have captained sides.'

Cole claimed the team spirit within the England side would help get over the disappointment of failing to qualify for the European Championships earlier in the summer.

'We've got a great team spirit and we're building on every trip,' added Cole.

'I think it's important that players motivate themselves these days.

'It was hard to take, we would have loved to have been there (at Euro 2008).

'Any time you get a disappointment in your career you have to use that as a motivation to succeed.'

Cole admitted he could not guarantee England's fans that the national side would qualify for the next World Cup.

He added: 'There are no guarantees in life in anything. All I can guarantee England fans is they have got 23 players in the squad who will run through brick walls to get there.'

Cole admitted watching Spain take the title in Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland had been hard to take.

He explained: 'Spain had a very good tournament. The World Cup (in South Africa) seems a lifetime away but it will come around in a flash.

'We want to qualify and we want to be in good form going into it. It's great to be involved in competitive football again with England.'

Great Britain's fine showing in the Olympics - with a total of 12 gold medals so far in Beijing - had proved an inspiration.

The Chelsea midfielder, who netted the first goal in his team's 4-0 defeat of Portsmouth in the Barclays Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge yesterday, added: 'Everyone in this squad loves to play for England and wants to do well but it's great how we are going in the Olympics.'
