Guardiola applauds Barca's spirit

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola hailed his side's self-belief after watching them score two last-gasp goals to beat Boca Juniors in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Saturday night.

Barca looked set to suffer their first defeat under Guardiola as they trailed Boca 1-0 heading into injury-time at the Nou Camp, but Carles Puyol drew the teams level before Samuel Eto'o earned the hosts a 2-1 win with his 95th-minute strike.

The Catalan giants had barely been troubled in winning their six previous matches since Guardiola replaced Frank Rijkaard in the hotseat, running up a tally of 29 goals scored and just six conceded, but they needed to show something different against Boca - much to Guardiola's delight.

'We played against Boca, one of the biggest teams in the world. The team continue to show their effort and this is a good sign,' said Guardiola.

'Sometimes we will lose, but even so if we continue fighting until the referee blows his whistle we will be a good team.

'I am very satisfied with the performance of the team. The players are very good, they believe in themselves, and they need to maintain this.

'In sport winning is everything. The first step to building something is not to give up.'

Barca president Joan Laporta, who has seen his club go two years without winning a major piece of silverware, added: 'Pep has said that he guarantees the team will fight, which they showed here right until the end.

'We ended up winning a game that looked very difficult.'
