TORONTO -- Toronto FC signed former U.S. under-20 national team forward Johann Smith on Friday after sending money to New England to swap places in Major League Soccer's allocation rankings.
Toronto moved from 13th to second in the rankings to acquire the former Bolton Wanderers player.
"He's got the pace of Marvell Wynne, and can get by players," Toronto manager Mo Johnston said. "We're very thrilled to have him, he adds youth and we're looking forward to working with him."
The 21-year-old Smith was selected for last year's U.S. team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, but a pre-tournament injury forced him to withdraw.
