Kompany: Hamburg denied me Olympic medal

Vincent Kompany has hit out at his club side Hamburg by claiming they prevented him from winning a medal at the Olympic Games. Kompany returned to Germany on Wednesday after being recalled from Beijing for Friday's Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich, and was keen to set the record straight. He bemoaned a lack of sympathy towards his situation after he tried to remain with the Belgian team, who had qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in their history. 'I am being made to look as if I broke a promise,' he said. 'There was a written agreement between Hamburg and the Belgian FA, but my promise was that we would look at the sporting situation. 'Hamburg have been in the Bundesliga for nearly 50 years and played Bayern nearly 100 times, and they will play Bayern another 100 times, but for Belgium, it was the first time ever at the Olympic Games.' On Monday, the 22-year-old informed Hamburg that he would not be returning to Germany as planned on Tuesday, but intended to stay with his national team until they were eliminated from the Games. The Bundesliga side threatened legal action against the Belgian FA, who had claimed the decision to stay was purely the player's, and Kompany later changed his mind and decided to return. 'But nobody seems to have any understanding for me when I consider whether or not it would interest me to play in the quarter-finals with Belgium,' he added. 'For me, it was logical to remain in China, but I don't have either the strength or power to fight HSV alone.' Although Kompany denied a rift between himself and his employers, he appealed for his situation to be put into perspective. Before leaving for the Olympic Games, he met with the club and sought a compromise, unlike other Bundesliga players who just left without agreeing anything with their clubs. 'I am not playing for Argentina or Brazil, I play for a small association,' he continued. 'The Belgian FA is scared of HSV, but the Brazilians aren't. Schalke have important games coming up too, but Rafinha, like Bremen's Diego, just left them. 'I am being punished for trying to find a compromise. 'If I had been a German player appearing for Germany at the Olympics, would the fans be mad with the player or the club?' Kompany now faces the prospect of a fine from his club, but is keen to move on from the dispute. He said: 'I will try and concentrate and fulfil my duty. I am a professional and will leave my personal issues to one side. 'I don't have a conflict with the club and the coach.'
