Championship clubs scalped in Carling Cup upsets

Luton put aside their ongoing problems to knock Championship side Plymouth out of the Carling Cup with a 2-0 win on Tuesday night.

On a night when several Championship teams were upset, Luton - rock bottom of the football league after severe financial and administrative issues - earned a second-round spot at Argyle's expense.

Rossi Jarvis (15) put the stricken home side ahead and after Argyle thought they had equalised, Tristan Plummer scored 13 minutes from time to seal a morale-boosting win.

Charlton fell at home to League One Yeovil, losing 1-0 at the Valley.

After 28 minutes Paul Warne was on hand to put the Glovers in front and the west country side held on admirably to progress to the second round.

Another third tier side, Crewe, came out on top against Championship visitors Barnsley with a 2-0 win.

Michael O'Connor scored from the spot to put the Railwaymen in front in the 14th minute after Darren Moore's foul on Tom Pope. Another penalty, this time by Anthony Elding, made it 2-0.

Sam Baldock's first-half goal gave Roberto Di Matteo's MK Dons a 1-0 win over Norwich.

Paul Parry's double helped Cardiff beat Bournemouth 2-1 on the south coast.

Reading won 2-1 away at Dagenham and Redbridge thanks to Noel Hunt's late winner and Burnley went through with a 2-0 win at Bury courtesy of Martin Paterson's double.

QPR came out on top at Swindon, winning a topsy-turvy match 3-2 thanks to Damien Delaney's 54th-minute winner. Iain Dowie's side had been 2-1 down at half-time.

Southampton won 3-1 at Exeter thanks largely to David McGoldrick's brace while Ipswich won 4-1 at home to Leyton Orient, Danny Haynes scoring twice.

Macclesfield beat Blackpool 2-0 at home as Shaun Brisley and Martin Gritton found the net.

Macclesfield's Terry Dunfield and opponent Keith Southern were sent off shortly before the break after clashing aggressively.

Neil Mellor scored twice as Championship outfit Preston won 2-0 against Chesterfield at Deepdale.

Shaun MacDonald scored twice for Swansea as they beat Brentford 2-0 in Wales.

Will Hoskins' strike two minutes from time ensured Watford's progress with a 1-0 win at home to Bristol Rovers.

Wolves escaped a humiliating defeat by League Two minnows Accrington at Molineux as they came from behind to win 3-2 in extra-time.

Mick McCarthy's side had trailed to Paul Mullin's first-half strike but Chris Iwelumo scored twice and after Ian Craney had levelled, Mark Davies got the extra-time winner for Wolves.

Derby also needed 120 minutes to beat League Two Lincoln but Nathan Ellington's hat-trick proved just about enough to get the win after his side had been trailing until seven minutes from time.

Crystal Palace came from behind to beat League One visitors Hereford 2-1.

Moses Ashikodi (41) scored the opener for Hereford, only for Nick Carle to equalise on the stroke of half-time with a fortuitous long-range effort.

Summer signing John Oster then earned the win for the Eagles with his goal on the hour.

Jermaine Beckford scored a hat-trick as Leeds won 5-2 at League Two Chester.
