Championship clubs scalped in Carling Cup upsets

Luton put aside their ongoing problems to knock Championship side Plymouth out of the Carling Cup with a 2-0 win on Tuesday night.

On a night when several Championship teams were upset, Luton - rock bottom of the football league after severe financial and administrative issues - earned a second-round spot at Argyle's expense.

Charlton fell at home to League One Yeovil, losing 1-0 at the Valley.

After 28 minutes Paul Warne was on hand to put the Glovers in front and the west country side held on admirably to progress to the second round.

Another third tier side, Crewe, came out on top against Championship visitors Barnsley with a 2-0 win.

Michael O'Connor scored from the spot to put the Railwaymen in front in the 14th minute after Darren Moore's foul on Tom Pope. Another penalty, this time by Anthony Elding, made it 2-0.

Derby also needed 120 minutes to beat League Two Lincoln but Nathan Ellington's hat-trick proved just about enough to get the win after his side had been trailing until seven minutes from time.

Crystal Palace came from behind to beat League One visitors Hereford 2-1.

Moses Ashikodi (41) scored the opener for Hereford, only for Nick Carle to equalise on the stroke of half-time with a fortuitous long-range effort.
