Shiels gets Norn Iron call to face Scotland

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has named Dean Shiels in his squad for the first time.

The Hibernian midfielder, 23, was called up for the friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park on August 20.

It is a welcome boost for Shiels, who won the last of his four caps 18 months ago in the 0-0 draw with Wales.

Burnley defender Michael Duff has been recalled after recovering from knee and hamstring injuries that hampered his progress last season.

Worthington has also included Keith Gillespie in his 20-man squad even though he is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

The Sheffield United winger is understood to be making a good recovery and his fitness will be monitored over the course of the week.

Northern Ireland squad:

Taylor (Birmingham), Mannus (Linfield); Baird (Fulham), Hughes (Fulham), Craigan (Motherwell), McAuley (Ipswich), McCartney (West Ham), Evans (Manchester United), Duff (Burnley); Davis (Fulham), Gillespie (Sheffield United), O'Connor (Crewe), Clingan (Norwich), Brunt (West Brom), Shiels (Hibernian); Healy (Fulham), Lafferty (Rangers), Thompson (Stockport), Feeney (Cardiff - on loan at Dundee United), Paterson (Scunthorpe).
