McClaren could be back in Champions League

Steve McClaren could be set for a quick return to English football as the new FC Twente boss rubs shoulders with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in today's Champions League third qualifying round draw.

McClaren's Dutch side made it into the competition after beating Ajax in a play-off last season and the former Middlesbrough boss could find himself pitting his wits against one of Arsenal, Liverpool or Rangers.

All three of the top British sides are seeded in the draw which rewards the winners with a place in the lucrative group stages. Rangers, however, must first overcome Lithuanians Kaunas in their second qualifying round second-leg tie.

Despite being seeded, there are plenty of potential pitfalls for the British sides, not least the inclusion of the likes of Atletico Madrid, Galatasaray and Sparta Prague among the 16 non-seeds.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits there are plenty of teams he would rather avoid in the draw - but says he will not have had a sleepless night preparing to discover who the Gunners will face next month.

Wenger told Arsenal official website: 'There are quite a few teams we would like to avoid. That is why it is better not to look at it. We will just take who we get.

'We just have to improve now, to use the two tournaments we play to get physically stronger and better, then we will play who we get.'

Meanwhile Irish champions Drogheda will also feature in the draw. But they must overturn a first-leg deficit away to Dinamo Kiev in order to give them a chance of landing a plum third qualifying round tie.

SEEDED TEAMS: Liverpool; Barcelona; Arsenal; Schalke 04; Juventus; Rangers/Kaunas; Marseille; Steaua Bucharest; Panathinaikos/Dinamo Tbilisi; IFK Gothenburg/Basel; Olympiakos; Fenerbahce/MTK Hungaria; Shakhtar Donetsk; Anderlecht/BATE; Fiorentina; Spartak Moscow.

UNSEEDED TEAMS: Atletico Madrid; Sheriff Tiraspol/Sparta Prague; Drogheda/Dinamo Kiev; Levski Sofia; Slavia Prague; Galatasaray; Inter Baku/Partizan; Vitoria Guimaraes; Domzale/Dinamo Zagreb; Beitar Jerusalem/Wisla Krakow; Standard Liege; Twente Enschede; Tampere/Artmedia; Aalborg/Modrica; Brann/Ventspils; Anorthosis/Rapid Vienna.
